Here, at Loch Raven Technical Academy, we offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities to allow students to demonstrate their creativity and learn more about topics that interest them.

Extracurricular Activities


Art Club

Art club is an after-school program for students to receive extra fine art enrichment. Students will have the opportunity to work on high school magnet portfolios, as well as other visual art activities that push the boundary of their creativity. The Art club will meet every other Thursday from 3:15-4:15 in room 110.

 

Battle of the Books (Alaoui)

Battle of the Book is a partnership between BCPS and the Baltimore County Public Library. The BOB after-school club readies students for an in-person competition with other county middle schools. Club reading is focused on the 8 preselected Battle books. Students read and engage in books discussions in preparation of answering multiple-choice questions pertaining to the content of the selected books. Meets every Wednesday from 3:15-4:15 in the library.

 

Black Excellence (Tamagnini)

The BE (Black Excellence) Program - (formerly Black Saga) 

  • The BE Program celebrates African American heritage and history.
  • The BE Program provides a forum for students to showcase their knowledge about this critical part of American history while celebrating African American achievements. Study important historical facts and events in order to compete against other teams / schools.

Meetings will be on Wednesdays from 7:45-8:15 for the month of October and then Wednesday after school from 3-4:15 in RM 139.

Chess Club (McCusker)

The Loch Raven Technical Academy Chess Club is open to all students from all grade levels, boys, and girls, from beginner to advanced players.  The chess club will meet on Friday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Room 123.

Dance (Reeves)

Is an after-school program that offers students the opportunity to learn and create dances. Students must audition by learning a 64-count dance or creating a one-minute solo. This dance company performs in basketball games and the LRTA Winter/ Spring dance show case.  Meets Wednesdays/Thursdays 3:15-5.

Green Club (Ms. Knio & Ms. Bernblum)

Green Club allows the students to be environmentally conscious and work on projects that will have a positive impact on our environment. Students will also spread their knowledge to their peers to make our school and community more sustainable. Some of the activities include propagating plants, starting a recycling program, weeding, planting, and maintaining the courtyard as well as picking up trash from common areas. Wednesdays from 3:15-4:00pm       

Inspirational Choir (Easterling)

Inspirational Choir performs contemporary songs with positive, inspiring messages. Inspirational Choir has performed songs by such artists as Kirk Franklin, Beyonce, and Katy Perry as well as other well-known artists. All students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are welcome. Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays from 3:15 until 4:15 in Room 102 in the A Wing. 

National Junior Honor Society (Magsamen & Kunkle)

The National Junior Honor Society recognized the most outstanding students in each grade based on their commitment to academics, leadership, service, and citizenship.  Membership is a very high honor and less than 5% of students are inducted to the organization.  The chapter designs and implements initiatives to better the community.  In the past, we have held field days, raised money for victims of disaster, created displays for the library, volunteered at the Very Special Arts Festival, tutored peers, and planned formal induction ceremonies.  Students are nominated for membership based on their academic record and must then complete a rigorous application process which includes essays and teacher recommendations; membership is extremely selective and not all who apply will be inducted.  The Honor Society meets every Tuesday from 3:15-4:15 in RM 126.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) Club (Shepherd)

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) is a nationwide organization originally formed to prevent underage drinking and driving.  Today, the focus has broadened to helping teens avoid destructive decisions.  At LRTA, our club represents diverse students coming together in a nonjudgmental environment that fosters healthy decision-making. through small class-size parties, creating affirmation posters, playing competitive games, sharing life stories, breathing exercises and coloring. We meet on Wednesdays from 3-4:30 p.m. in Room 124C.  Email Mrs. Shepherd on Schoology for more information.

TV Studio (Prizzi)

The LRTA TV studio was created in 1996. This student produced a program that shares information about upcoming events, honored students and staff, and recent happenings with the school community. The anchors for the Morning Show are members of the TV Studio Homeroom and guest anchors occur throughout the year. The permanent crew members, who operate the equipment, apply for membership in the spring, and then apprentice before becoming part of the crew.

6th and 7th graders wishing to join next year's crew apply in April. All crew members earn service hours. Crew members are required to have excellent attendance and be able to be at school by 8:00 am. Students who are interested in becoming a part of the crew should see Ms. Prizzi in the TV studio or room 104.

Wishing Star Theatre (Drama) (Prizzi)

The “Wishing Star Theatre” Black Box Theater is in the Music Wing.  This after-school program has students performing as well as helping with management, programs, costumes, tickets etc. Open auditions for all grade levels are held in the fall and spring for each production. Wishing Star Theater meets on Wednesday and Thursday in the theater. Past shows include “Cinderella”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”, “School House Rock”, “Café Murder”, “Big Bad”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “How to Eat Like a Child”, “A Christmas Carol”, “Gift of the Magi”, “Wizard of OZ”, “Into The Woods”, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown”, “The Little Mermaid” and “The Wind In The Willows.”

Meets every Wednesday and Thursday in the black box theater from 3:15 to 4:15 PM.

Wishing Star Theatre: Tech Crew (Drama) (Prizzi/Tamagnini)

The Wishing Star Theater “Tech Crew gives students the opportunity to develop leadership and mentoring skills. Students learn how to operate the lighting and sound equipment, and the use of video equipment. Students will also work on designing costumes, sets, and creating props for the winter play and spring musical.

Meets every Tuesday in the black box theater from 3:15 to 4:15 PM.

Yearbook Club (Fields & Shepherd)

The Yearbook Club is for anyone who likes to take pictures, critique photos and magazines, loves to design,  has an eye for detail and accuracy, is willing to work hard and wants to create the next best LRTA yearbook ever! Members will photograph students in other clubs, attend home sporting events, choose a yearbook cover, design the pages of the yearbook and so much more.  The Yearbook Club meets on Thursdays from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. in Room 136D.  Email Ms. Shepherd or Ms. Fields on Schoology for more information

Badminton – Badminton is a co-ed sport that falls into the BCPS Athletics program at the middle school level.  During their season in the fall, students practice Tuesday-Friday after school to compete in two tournaments against other schools in BCPS.

Cross Country – Cross Country is a co-ed sport that falls into the BCPS Athletics program at the middle school level.  During their season in the fall, students practice Tuesday-Friday after school to compete in two meets against other schools in BCPS.  For information email [email protected] or [email protected]

Track & Field – Track & Field is a co-ed sport that falls into the BCPS Athletics program at the middle school level.  During their season in the spring, students practice Tuesday-Friday after school to compete in two meets against other schools in BCPS.

Basketball – Basketball is a sport that falls into the BCPS Athletics program at the middle school level and has a girls’ team and a boys’ team.  During their season in the fall, students practice Tuesday-Friday after school to compete in about 12 games against other schools in BCPS.

Allied Softball – Allied Softball is a sport that falls into BCPS Athletics program at the middle school level.  Allied Sports is a totally inclusive program that affords students with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports along-side their non-disabled peers.  During their season in the spring, students practice Tuesdays and Thursdays and will compete against other schools in BCPS.
