“Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.
The goal of the Physical Education Department is to get students active, open their minds and ignite their interest in life long fitness. It is critical that our students understand how their activity level and choices affect their health and that a higher activity level can have a positive effect on EVERY part of their lives!
The curriculum for Physical Education in Baltimore County Public Schools provides students the opportunity to experience individual and team movement activities, which allows each individual to choose those activities that they enjoy most then participate in them outside of the schoolhouse setting. It is these experiences, along with an understanding of how the body functions, that establishes a real understanding of the importance of incorporating physical activity in their daily lives.
Requirements
1. Uniforms - Students are required to wear the LRA Physical Education uniform. Students may purchase a uniform during the first two weeks of school. It then becomes the student’s personal property. The student is responsible for keeping it clean and in school for their physical education class.
a. Purpose – The purpose of wearing a uniform is for the student’s hygiene and safety. Students will be sweating during class which will, in turn, be wicked up into their clothes. As the LRA uniform is a cotton T-Shirt and shorts, it allows the student to move comfortably and safely throughout all activities without restriction. Students will change back into their clean clothes at the end of the class to ensure that they remain clean for their school day.
b. Cost - $12 for the shirt and $12 for the shorts. ($24 total) LRA accepts cash and money orders. No checks.
c. Street clothes – students may not wear the clothes they wore to school under their PE uniform. They will not be allowed to participate unless they are safely and appropriately attired to do so. This is a decision on the student’s part to follow class expectations or not to do the required work and receive no credit for the class period.
2. If for any reason a uniform can NOT be purchased during the first two weeks of school, send in a note with your student with an approximate date of when one can be purchased.
3. Shoes - Students are required to wear tennis shoes that are securely tied for physical education class. No slip on shoes, boots of any kind or bare feet are allowed at any time. THIS IS FOR THEIR SAFETY AND NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE!
4. Socks – Socks should be worn with their shoes. We suggest that students keep an extra pair of socks in their PE locker for emergency purposes.
5. Unable to participate – If for any reason, your child is unable to actively participate in Physical Education class, send in a note expressing your request. Be sure to include the date, a phone number where you can be contacted that day, and whether you are requesting one or two classes. Any excuse from movement activity longer that three days, must be in the form of a doctor’s note. Students who are excused from physical activity must still dress for class and will be given another way to participate that does not involve movement. It may involve offering feedback to others while they practice, officiate a game, or doing a written assignment. For every class, students are required to complete work related to Physical Education class whether it be in written form or movement.
6. Deodorant and baby wipes – In middle school, students begin to have hormonal changes and wearing deodorant is important. In an effort to reinforce healthy hygiene habits, we recommend that students bring in baby wipes to clean up after class and reapply deodorant before re-dressing. Showers are not required, so using the baby wipes helps students feel clean, refreshed and ready for the rest of their day.
7. Sweatshirts/sweatpants – Students may wear pullover or zip-up sweatshirts and sweatpants or leggings with no design for PE with their uniform under their sweats. Jackets will not be allowed as they are not safe in an activity situation.
8. Lockers - LRA provides a PE locker with a built-in combination in the locker room for your student. Students are not to give out their combination to anyone and are required to have ALL ITEMS secured before leaving the locker room. Some books are too large to fit into the lockers so a secured room is provided for that purpose. LRA is not responsible for items left unattended.
9. Time to change clothes – Students will have five minutes from the late bell to change clothes and leave the locker room. Any student remaining in the locker room past five minutes will be marked tardy from the locker room.
