LAW
Crime is a major concern of the US citizenry. Crime involving students 18 years and younger is increasing at an alarming rate. Fewer than 11% of Americans are under the age of 18, yet and juveniles comprise nearly 1/3 of the crimes against property and 1/5 of the crime against people in the US. Therefore, teachers, legal advisors, and politicians have focused their attention to the debate over juvenile crime and its solutions.
The Law courses are designed for students in the Law & Finance Magnet program of Loch Raven Academy to broaden their understanding of the laws and impacts of the American legal system. It is only through the understanding of all aspects of our legal system that our students will come to respect and appreciate the law, our law enforcement officials, the legal system of the United States and Maryland.
In grade six students will explore the foundations of the judiciary system and experience a mock trial. In grade seven, their focus will broaden by examining the rights and responsibilities in the criminal justice system. Lastly in grade eight, students will participate in the high school juvenile justice course in which they have the opportunity to earn ½ a Baltimore County High School credit towards high school graduation.
FINANCE
An increasing concern is the lack of understanding of modern economic mechanics. This Finance magnet will enable students to understand how money can work for them, and what they need to do to make effective use of their resources. The students will understand the origins of the modern economic system, how to prepare for their financial future, and how to protect themselves from financial risks. The students will participate in practical exercise, research, and peer collaboration to prepare them to be able to make informed financial decisions.
In the second half of grade six, students will explore the facets of personal finance, create, and evaluate personal budgeting. In grade seven, students will delve into the realm of entrepreneurship and create realistic business plans. Lastly, in the second half of grade eight, students will broaden their horizons in their study of international finance.
In addition to the grade level specific finance study, all law and finance students will have the opportunity to participate yearly in the Stock Market Game.
